LELO Makes a Movie – and It Doesn’t Star a Single Sex Toy

LELO's recently released movie trailer is unusual, but leave it to this creator of pleasure objects to leave us crazy with anticipation.

There are certain things we tend to expect from the creators of high-end pleasure objects: quality, functionality, style and orgasms galore, to name a few. But a motion picture? Not so much. But that's just what we got from LELO recently, when it announced the new trailer and interactive experience for Beyond the Wave, a mainstream movie starring Casper Van Dien and slated for release in the summer.

Now, I probably don't have to tell you that sex toy companies don't typically get into the film business. Like, ever. And Beyond the Wave isn't the sort of content you'd expect from a sex toy company. First, it doesn't include a single pleasure product of any kind. Heck, it's not even about sex. It's a little hard to wrap one's head around, but that isn't such a bad thing. After all, one of the major barriers in the sex toy industry is people's misconceptions about what sex toys do and what they're for. They don't replace or stand in for a partner. They don't diminish your ability to enjoy sex without them. And for many people, they not only produce pleasure, but make it possible. Sex toys are tools and, at their core, they're designed to get us in touch with our sexuality, our bodies and, in coupled sex, with our partners.

Yes. Partners. You read that right. Put down your Ina Wave for just a sec and let that sink in. Because Beyond the Wave isn't a story about a woman and her vibrator, it's a love story, and one that cleverly takes aim right at the heart of what keeps relationships afloat: understanding your partner's point of view.

"When I read the script, the project spoke to me on a personal level," the movie's star, Casper Van Dien, said in LELO's February press release. "I think many people in 2015 can feel lonely and disconnected even when someone is right beside them. Beyond the Wave shows the importance of not only relying on yourself, of not just communicating or spending time with someone, but genuinely trying to understand your partner's perspective."

Sex toys can certainly spice up any couple's sex life, but LELO's message is right on the money; great sex is about a connection, the kind that most often stems from communication and compassion between partners. Check out the trailer for yourself below.

Ooh! And did we mention that you can watch an extended version of the trailer as an interactive experience with a friend or lover? The PlayTogether experience allows you to sync up to smartphones and display video across them both. And that's just the trailer! Leave it to LELO to make us crazy with anticipation.
