Group marriage is one form of polygamous relationship. Only sparse research exists on the practice, but anecdotal evidence suggests that such arrangements can produce emotional and legal complications. Additionally, because of the well-documented history of abuse of women and girls in polygamous cultures, most countries have resisted legalizing the practice. Advocates argue that adults should be free to enter into polygamous relationships and that the legalization of the practice would reduce some of the problems that tend to come with this family structure by bringing it out into the open.
