Infibulation

Infibulation is the removal of the external female genitalia, and the suturing of the vulva to prevent sexual intercourse. The practice also sometimes involves the clasping of foreskin in men.

More About Infibulation

Infibulation is a common practice in northeastern African countries. Although it is a traditional practice, it is also very controversial. The practice occurs to varying degrees from the fastening of a ring, clasp, or stitches to the labia majora, to more severe genital mutilation including complete removal of the clitoris, labia minor, and majora with the stitching up of most of the vagina. The practice is more common in women, though does occur with men and the clasping of the foreskin.
