The term smash is a slang term used to refer to the act of having casual sex. While its origins are vague it seems to have emerged in the early 2000s with the popular internet game Smash or Pass, becoming popular in 2010.
The Rise of Casual Sex Slang
The rise of social media as well as online and then app-based dating platforms saw casual sex become more prevalent than ever in the early 2000s.

As casual sex became more culturally relevant, a roster of casual sex-specific slang grew to describe it including terms like booty call, fuck buddy, sneaky link, hook up, smush and of course, smash.
Smash or Pass?
Smash or Pass is a game in which players assess the sexual appeal of a person and decide whether they would hypothetically choose to "smash" (have sex with) or "pass" (not have sex with) that person. The individuals in question can include celebrities, fictional characters, or acquaintances of the participants. Smash or Pass got its start as a party game but found popularity on the internet beginning in 2010.
