Spit or Swallow: Does Sperm Actually Have Health Benefits?
Could those of us who prefer to spit over swallow be missing out on massive health benefits?
There’s a lot of information out there surrounding the health benefits of swallowing semen, especially when it comes to sperm and vitamin D. Life would be easier if there were a label on loads, like a sperm nutritional chart, but alas.
We’ll take you through the science to see if your excitement over the benefits of sperm is premature.
Does sperm have Vitamin D?
Let’s get this out of the way now: No, sperm doesn’t have vitamin D.
While seminal fluid, which carries the sperm, does have some nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and zinc, it’s mostly water and mucus. Also, consider the volume involved. Each ejaculation is roughly a teaspoon, so you’d only be getting a tiny amount of any nutrients or calories.
I hate to break it to you, but you’re not getting much nutrition with each load. But are there other health benefits of swallowing semen?
Health Benefits of Swallowing Semen
“With even a small amount of nutrients in sperm, there must be some health benefits of swallowing semen, right?” You ask.
Sorry, but no.
The amounts of essential nutrients in semen and sperm are so small that they wouldn’t make any difference. If you wanted to get any nutritional benefits from swallowing semen, you would need to swallow a lot of semen.
Let’s look at protein. The amount of protein in one shot of fresh-squeezed sexy sauce is about 5040 milligrams per 100 milliliters. If one unit of semen and sperm is about a teaspoon’s worth (around 1.5-5ml) then you would need to ingest about half a cup of cum to get around five grams of protein. That’s a lot of semen for less protein than you get from one large egg.
So, if my math is right, you would need to harvest about 1,000 loads to get any minimal benefits. Or you could just whip up some breakfast and call it a day.
There could be other health benefits of swallowing semen that go beyond the purely nutritional, though.
For some, the upshot of swallowing is the act itself. Some people have a cum kink or fetish. Cum fetishes are nothing new, nor even that rare. There are plenty of cum bunnies running around out there who get the benefits of joy and happiness from indulging. Cum kinksters don’t need to swallow to be happy, but if they feel better saving, jarring, and ingesting large quantities of semen, more power to them.
But just because sperm isn't an effective source of Vitamin D doesn't mean that there isn't a link between sperm and this essential nutrient.
Sperm and Vitamin D
One study, possibly for the first time, found a receptor in sperm for vitamin D in 2006. Five years later, a 2011 study showed that vitamin D positively impacts sperm motility. This means that vitamin D is good for increasing the chances of fertility.
So, really the only connection between sperm and vitamin D is not that sperm is full of vitamin D, but that you need vitamin D to have full sperm. And as it goes with misinformation, this relationship between Vitamin D and sperm somehow got twisted into the claim that sperm has Vitamin D, which, to reiterate, it does not.
Is it safe to swallow semen?
Overall, yes, semen is safe to swallow. The big issues arise with STIs and other types of infections.
If your partner-for-life or playmate-for-a-night is free from infections, then you're good to go. However, if your partner/playmate is non-monogamous and plays things loose when it comes to sexual safety, then there is some risk.
Remember, the only thing more important than “consent” is “informed consent”. Be 100% sure the sperm you swallow is free of disease, even if it means an awkward discussion and requiring proof of testing.
There are also a few people out there with an allergy to semen. If you are one of those with a “nut” allergy, we obviously do not recommend swallowing.
The Bottom Line
Does sperm have vitamin D? No. Are there any health benefits from swallowing semen? No. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Semen and sperm do have extremely small amounts of vital nutrients, but not enough for your body to get a boost. While there is no vitamin D in sperm, anyone looking to conceive should make sure to get enough vitamin D as this essential nutrient will help keep your lil’ swimmers moving.
Even if there are no benefits to swallowing sperm if you enjoy it, then bon appetite!
