Sexuality in music videos is no new thing, and Katy Perry has continued this age-old tradition, showing off lots her incredible body in her just released “Woman’s World” video. In the 39-year-old singer’s first single off her new album, 143, which arrives September 20th, it seems Perry is definitely enjoying her sexuality.
Katy Perry Says It’s a ‘Woman’s World’ and Encourages us All to Masturbate in Latest Video
She also seems to be championing the use of a particular vibrator, which happens to be one of our favorites as well.
A candy-colored dive into Perry's idea of a woman's world
After introducing herself and a group of her dancers in poses, and outfits, that replicate the iconic Lunch Atop a Skyscraper photograph, Perry and her ladies as much stand in front of urinals, dance among sparks, and we watch the main lady strip off her vest, wield a sparkly hammer and drill.
Then Katy holds up a Womanizer Premium 2 vibrator. Her dancers circle her a few seconds later, holding the same vibrator in their hands, pointed at their leader.
As we're told often throughout the video, it’s a woman’s world and we're lucky to be living in it. And beyond the visual shout-out to the Womanizer, there are plenty of other supposed nods to female empowerment in the video.
In her usual cotton-candy approach to visuals, at the 1:14 mark, Perry is crushed by an anvil. Then we're thrown to another scene, in which she blows herself up by sucking her thumb, then struts across a wild city street scene sporting fantastically futuristic mechanical legs and a white bikini top. Perry sticks a gasoline nuzzle into her perfect glute, plays off YouTube singer Trisha Paytas driving a monster truck, and shouts her name. She ends the fever dream of a video with one hand holding onto the side of a helicopter in flight, the other holding a bright white prop of the woman sexuality symbol.
Championing women's empowerment?
As to be expected, the video earned a bunch of commentary, both pro and con, from the music community as well as from Perry’s legion of Katy Cats fans. Of course, Perry, or anyone else working in the modern music field, welcomes any talk across the web, and with “Woman’s World,” she's certainly generating lots of talk.
First of all, Katy collaborated here, as she has before, with producer Dr. Luke, who was sued by singer Kesha for sexual assault. Luke has denied the allegations, and in response, filed his own countersuit for defamation against Kesha. After a years-long legal battle, the two settled out of court.
The irony of making a music video about women's empowerment with a man accused of sexual assault did not go unnoticed.
There have also been lots of questions concerning the video's lyrics and their intent. The video and song have been widely denounced as overly broad and outdated in its swipes against female stereotypes and many were irked about the blatant product placement.
Satire? Fun? Just missing the mark?
Perry herself claims the video is satirical. Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Perry insisted that most of her iconic songs have a women's empowerment angle, like 'Woman's World.'
“I think that people when they think of me, they think of ‘Roar,’ they think of ‘Firework,’ sometimes they think of ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ but I think mostly they think of these kind of empowering songs. Songs with a message, songs that are captions on t-shirts and stuff like that, or things that help people get through. And I love that. I love hearing the stories and really, I write these songs from a place where I need to get through something. But so I wanted to continue with that and also, this is the first contribution I have given since becoming a mother and since feeling really connected to my feminine divine.”
As much as we love her championing masturbation and sex toys, especially one of our faves, we can't decide if Perry is completely missing the mark, throwing satirical jabs at her industry, just having fun, or somehow managing all of the above.
Maybe rather than a 'Woman's World,' it's just Katy Perry’s world, and we're just living in it.
