I ;love stories of ancient cultures and how they navigated sex. On the first read, how ancient Egyptians attempted birth control, pleasure, sexual relationships, and more might sound pretty wild. However, when you think about it, is anything they tried really that unusual? We’re talking about a civilization from thousands of years ago that was recording their sexuality in graphic detail - possibly for pleasure, possibly as a sex ed manual. They were also attempting to find remedies to control contraception, possibly for population control, possibly to pursue pleasure more freely. So, while stories of bees as vibrator motors and crocodile dung as birth control sound outrageous to us now, they were part of our evolving understanding of sex and should be remembered as important.

Where's the Strangest Place You've Ever Done It?

Rocking the Boat

So, I have a confession to make. I am Canadian. I have never had sex in a canoe. In fact, I think I’ve only been in a canoe a couple times in my sex-having years. That said, we did have a little 12-foot aluminum boat with a 10 horsepower motor on it instead of a canoe. Did I have sex in that ever? No. Well, not with other people, anyway. This Canadians having sex in a canoe thing has always been one of the more ridiculous jokes floating around in the Great White North. It is made even more ridiculous considering the fellow who is purported to have said it isn’t even sure he made that statement. Yet it makes me wonder: do other countries or regions have these odd myths? If you know of some, share them with me!

Shame on North Carolina

In all seriousness, here is one place to not have sex because of an odd sexual belief or practice: North Carolina. And this isn’t some kind of myth or cultural silliness. In North Carolina, sex can continue even after a woman has withdrawn consent. So, yes, you may be completely into sex with your partner at the beginning, but if you change your mind for any reason - whether that be lack of interest or extreme violence - it won’t matter. Sex has been started so sex can be finished. This loophole has been in place for many years and has recently been used in two cases. There are attempts being made to close this up so that North Carolina joins nine other states in formally recognizing sex is an act of ongoing consent, but it is a challenge.

Voice of Pride

In many areas, June is the traditional month of Pride and as the celebrations wrap up for another year, it is important to remember the activist history of the big parades and parties of larger centers. Shortly after writing this, I’ll be heading to Toronto’s Pride events - one of the largest gatherings in the world. But the glitz and the glamour won’t mean a thing because I’ll be thinking about people like Savannah, a 13-year old Mormon girl who tried to give testimony in her church about being lesbian but had her microphone cut off. She was literally silenced for being queer. The church’s needs were put before this girl’s needs. Her voice was taken away because it didn’t fit in. This is what Pride is for. This is what Pride is about. It is a contentious and difficult time for Pride organizations, and I hope it leads to more activist voices coming through. Those voices, just like Savannah’s, need to be heard.
