An atypical gender role refers to any gender expression or behavior that does not match or conform to masculine and feminine norms. An atypical gender role includes any behavior or expression that does not follow male individuals adopting masculine gender roles and female individuals adopting feminine gender roles.

Atypical gender roles are displayed by individuals of all sexual orientations and genders, and, therefore, is not specific to any gender or sexual orientation. A female that performs a job that is traditionally only performed by males would be considered to display an atypical gender role.
