Plunge Dive Position

Updated: OCTOBER 1, 2024

The Plunge Dive position offers everything you love about standing sex with the option to go a bit deeper with the help of some of your living room furniture.

Plunge dive position: The receiving partner stands with one foot on a low but elevated surface such as a coffee table. The penetrating partner stands behind them, also with one foot on the elevated surface.

Both bodies are in sync for this sex position which is half the trick. Each partner stands with one leg propped up on that coffee table, which allows for deep penetration. And that deep penetration is more concentrated to one side, offering totally different type of stimulation than other sex positions.

To get into the Plunge Dive position, the receiving partner stands in front of a low, sturdy surface they can step on. They place one leg onto the sturdy surface, leaning slightly forward. The penetrating partner then comes up behind them, mirroring the receiver's position, then penetrates from behind.

While the Plunge Dive position is shown with a very low coffee table, it can be used with any slightly elevated surface including stairs, an aerobic step, or a sturdy box.

More About Plunge Dive Position

Standing sex positions, like the Plunge Dive position, are great go-tos for spur of the moment, super passionate, "gotta have it now" sex. Or when your surroundings just don't allow for sitting or laying down.

The Plunge Dive position can be a particularly great sex position for anyone with a curved penis or strap-on dildo. Since one side of the body is elevated, the dildo or penis is pushed more into one side of the receiving partner's canal than usual, making penetration feel different than most equal-side sex positions. Used to your advantage, this can make a curved penis really shine! Just experiment with surface level heights and whether you want to raise the left or right leg.

Regardless of penis curvature, the receiving partner can help "direct" where the final sensation of penetration with their own posture. Leaning forward will direct the penis into a different spot than if the receiver stands straight up. The receiver can also experiment with tilting the hips. Arching the back can make it easier to hit the G-spot or P-spot than if the receiver stands with a tucked pelvis.

If both of you feel comfortable with your balance in this position, the Plunge Dive leaves everyone's hands open for more activity. The world is your roaming hands' oyster with this one! We're particularly fond of adding a sex toy or masturbation for the receiving partner. This can help everybody have a great time and can even allow for synchronized orgasms if that's an end goal!

With the penetrating partner coming in from behind, the Plunge Dive also gets a gold star for neck kissing and nuzzling.

Modifying the Plunge Dive Sex Position

Balance and stability are the name of the game with this position, and the elevated surface can make it a bit harder to keep yours. If you're concerned about balance, you can tote your elevated surface of choice next to a wall or other large, sturdy piece of furniture, like the back of your couch. This can let you both put down a hand to stabilize yourselves as needed.

Even if you can hold the Plunge Dive sex position while standing, remember that sex usually includes movement. This movement can be what accidentally throws someone off balance, and without some way to catch themselves, this can be really dangerous. Especially if you plan on enjoying rough sex in the Plunge Dive position, having a surface to lean up against or catch yourself on if you lose your balance is crucial. And it's especially essential for the front partner who will be receiving the brunt of the forwards movement.

There's no shame in doing this sex position against a stabilizing surface. After all, you probably want to focus more on the pleasures of sex than simply trying to stay upright.

Like most standing sex positions, couples with a big height difference may struggle to make this work. If your hips don't line up in the same plane while standing, you can modify the Plunge Dive position by adding additional bolsters. This may look like doing the Plunge Dive on a set of stairs where one partner can stand a step higher than their partner. One partner can also attempt to lower themselves into a semi-squat position, but this may reduce the time you can spend in the Plunge Dive position once those muscles start quaking.

Even with these modifications, the Plunge Dive position will not be a good fit for some people. If that's the case, don't sweat it! There are hundreds of other sex positions that can better honor the bodies you're in today.

Every sex position won't work for every body, and trying new ways to experience pleasure together is part of the fun of sex!
