Female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) can be divided into three categories. Genital arousal disorder, subjective arousal disorder, and combined arousal disorder. Genital arousal disorder occurs when a woman does not experience the physical effects of arousal; even though she is mentally aware of sexual stimulation, her genitals do not swell or produce lubrication normally. Subjective arousal disorder occurs when a woman has a genital response to sexual stimulation, but her mind remains unaware of the sexual pleasure she is experiencing. Combined arousal disorder involves a dysfunction of both the mental and physical elements of sexual arousal.
There are a variety of reasons why FSAD occurs, and it is therefore difficult to diagnose. Although there is currently no sure treatment, in some cases FSAD is treated with low doses of testosterone.
