Sex in the news

Sex & Politics…Do We Care?

This latest report might surprise those who are dug in deeply in support of either American political party. According to Invigor Medical, new research has found that a mere seven percent of Americans see divergent political views as hindering in hooking up with someone. These new findings of the intersection between political beliefs and our libidos seem to fly in the face of the recent calls for tribalism in the political sphere that many Americans, and US news outlets, are so often accused of.

A more recent polarizing political point of view

It could be argued that the American political arena has never seen such a polarization between its peoples. It could be the intrusion (and depending on your POV, it’s a good or bad intrusion) of political outsider Donald Trump, coming around again. It could be the echo chamber of social media fostering a more biased field where folks simply hear and read their views reiterated in ala-carte-before-the-horse posts and tweets. It could be that the pandemic dug us deeper to what we believed as we were dug in at home. It just might be the way humans have evolved where we want more of the like-minded around us than ever before.

But this new report could be the breath of fresh air we all need…if anyone takes it to heart, that is.

The takeaways

  • As mentioned, only seven percent of Americans find political differences a deal breaker when it comes to ‘getting busy’ with a partner.
  • 93 percent believe a shared political view with a partner is not important.
  • six out of ten Americans continue sexual activity with a partner even if that partner changes their political views.
  • Republicans have the lowest level of weekly sexual activity.
  • 67 percent of Gay Republicans would date someone with opposing political views
  • When it comes to generational feelings, the report found that only 12 percent of Gen Z folks surveyed are open to engaging in a relationship with a partner who holds an opposing political belief than they have

Is there hope?

The report also includes findings on state sexual activities, with those states broken down over whether they are ‘red’ or ‘blue,' and one section entitled, “Willingness to Use Medications or Supplements to Enhance Sexual Activity.” (The use of adult toys between political pundits is not explored) And decidedly, while the bulk of the Invigor Medical findings seem to skew to heterosexual participants, still one might be able to take away some hope about how deeply U.S. views of politics don’t really impact personal desires...when one person desires another.
