Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia is a condition charactarized by chronic vulvar pain for which a cause cannot be identified. While it can present differently for each patient, the most common symptoms of vulvodynia are burning, stinging, and irritation. The condition is diagnosed by ruling out other causes of the pain. This can make getting a vulvodynia diagnosis a long and frustrating process.

More About Vulvodynia

There are two major forms of vulvodynia: Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome and Generalized Vulvodynia. The former is marked by pain surrounding the vaginal opening and is further classified in regards to whether the onset of pain coincided with the first attempt at vaginal penetration or if the patient had experienced successful vaginal pentration prior to the development of the pain. The latter, Generalized Vulvodynia, involves pain that is constant and more random in its location.
