Aphallatia

Aphallatia is a lack of sexual activity. Aphallatia is also known as celibacy. However, unlike the term celibacy, aphallatia does not necessarily denote a choice to abstain from sex or a moral judgement or reason for lack of sexual activity. Instead, it is a neutral term for the state of being without sexual activity.

There are many reasons why someone may be in a state of aphallatia. An individual may be in a state of aphallatia because they are abstaining from sexual interaction for moral or religious reasons. This could be a permanent decision, such as for members of a religious clergy, or a temporary decision made until the individual marries or enters a committed relationship. A widow or widower may decide to enter a state of aphallatia following the death of a spouse. An individual may decide to enter a state of aphallatia if they are struggling to find a suitable sexual mate. Someone in a state of aphallatia could be a virgin, but virginity is not implied by aphallatia.
