Coming Out

Coming out is a figure of speech that refers to a gay, lesbian, or transgender individual’s self-disclosure of their sexual orientation. Coming out is often a daunting experience because of the intolerance and stigmas associated with the LGBT community. This experience can have repercussions on the individual’s self-esteem and social relationships. By coming out, the person is also exposed to being ostracized. From a psychological standpoint, the process of coming out can bring emotional relief to most people.

Among celebrities, coming out can very easily encourage a media frenzy. Some of the most popular coming-outs include Ellen De Generes, Ricky Martin, Elton John, Cynthia Nixon, Rosie O’Donnell, and George Michael.

According to the Gender Equity Resource Center, individuals can come out by writing a letter to their closed ones or simply by sitting down and having an honest conversation with them. While it is safe to say that coming out may negatively affect one’s career, several laws have been implemented to protect individuals from being discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
