Disseminated gonococcal infection, also known as DGI, or systemic gonococcal infection, is a severe medical condition in which the bacterium that causes gonorrhea spreads into the bloodstream and other parts of the body. This condition can develop within two weeks of the initial gonorrhea infection. The symptoms can differ depending on the area of the body being affected by the bacteria. Symptoms can include fever and chills, pain or swelling in the joints or tendons, and/or a skin rash with pink pus-filled spots.
The risk factors for disseminated gonococcal infection are the same risk factors for most STIs, including gonorrhea. So the best way to avoid DGI is to take precautions against contracting STIs.
If treated, the prognosis for DGI is good, and symptoms usually clear up in 2-3 days. Left untreated, the condition can do permanent damage to the body.
