Hepatitis is a medical condition that is characterized by inflammation of the liver. Although the disease is widespread, symptoms of hepatitis can in some cases go unnoticed by the patient. The disease can be viral or non-viral, acute or chronic. Hepatitis has a variety of causes. Treatments are available for those affected.

Viral hepatitis is often caused by one of many viruses although most commonly by Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. Hepatitis A is most often spread through contaminated water and food prepared with contaminated water. Hepatitis B and C are spread through the blood. Hepatitis B is also sexually transmitted. There are a variety of preventative measures that may be taken to protect oneself against viral forms of hepatitis including vaccines, practicing good hygiene when preparing food products, and practicing safe sex.
