A hysterectomy is a surgery that is performed to remove the uterus. Depending on the type of hysterectomy (total or partial) it may also involve removing the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix as well as other surrounding structures. A hysterectomy is the most commonly performed gynecological surgical procedure. There is some controversy surrounding their prevalence based on the belief that they may be unnecessarily performed.
Some of the reasons one might have a hysterectomy include reproductive cancer, severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, vaginal prolapse, certain postpartum complications, as a preventative measure in the case of a strong family history of reproductive cancer or the presence of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, or as part of gender transition for transgender men.
