Lichen Sclerosis is a condition that presents as white spots on the skin. The condition primarily affects the anal and genital regions though it can appear on the upper body as well. The symptoms progress from white spots to bigger patches. Then, it turns to thin, crinkled skin with possible tearing and bruising. Scarring is possible.

Lichen Sclerosis is not contagious. Its exact cause is unknown. It is suspected that an overactive immune system and hormone issues could be to blame. It is recommended that all cases of LS in genital regions seek treatment-- even if the symptoms are not bad as the condition can ultimately lead to pain, scarring and for some discomfort that makes elimination and sexual activity difficult. The conditions can be treated with strong cortisone creams or with surgery to remove the affected skin. Surgery is a recommended option for people with the condition on the penis, it is less effective when LS is present on the vulva.
