Relationship Structure

Relationship structure refers to a set of agreements, rules, and titles that define the framework of a relationship. This term is used most commonly in nonmonogamous and specifically polyamorous relationships. It is commonly recognized that there are many different ways to participate in those relationships. A clearly defined relationship structure where all participants know what is expected of them and what is permitted within the bounds of the relationship is important.

A few examples of relationship structures include:

  • Don't Ask, Don' Tell (DADT): members of the relationship are allowed other partners, but do not talk about their activities with those partners.
  • Primary: members have partners of varying levels of emotional involvement. The primary partner holds a place of prominence.
  • Vee: one partner is involved with two other partners that are not involved with each other.
