A rope dress is an important component of rope bondage. As the name suggests, rope is run around the body and tied in intricate knots. It covers the body in strategic places like a dress would. By itself, it is not meant to restrain but it can restrain when pressure is applied or when used with other gear, such as a suspension bondage gear. It works similarly to a leather bondage harness.

A rope dress is rooted in Kinbaku, which is Japanese-style “tight binding.” It is practised both as an art form and as bondage play. It makes use of several pieces of thin rope, tied intricately to bind the receiver/bottom. In the Western version, a rope dress is created using about 50 feet (15 meters) of rope. This is passed through and around the body several times to create a binding pattern. To cover the crotch and nipple area, a crotch rope and pearl breast harness may be used.
