A transgender woman refers to an individual that was born with the biological characteristics of a man, but whose gender identity aligns with that of a woman. The term is generally used to refer to all individuals that have a misalignment between their biological sex and gender identity, where their gender identity is that of a woman. The term is not synonymous with transsexual although it is often used in that way.
A transgender woman can include both those individuals that have undergone gender affirmation surgery and those that have not. For this reason, the term is not synonymous with the term transsexual although the two are often used interchangeably. All transgendered women were assigned male at birth.
