In this episode of the Life in Red podcast, host Brittany Giese explores the concept of Digisexuality with sex-positive practitioner, therapist, and all-around enthusiastic explorer of things pleasurable, Dr. Markie Twist. A relatively new term, Dr. Twist defines digisexuality as sexual experiences that happen with the use of advanced technology.
Separated into three categories – or "waves" as Dr. Twist calls them – digisex incorporates, mediating technology, immersive technology, and technology with consciousness.
Where digisexuality is at and where it's headed
Most people have dipped their toe (or whatever else they like to dip) into the warm waters of sex with tech. Be it switching your sex toy to a low and steady thrumming or sexting some pictures to your lover, most of us in the modern world have used some sort of sextech to send or receive a tickle, you know where. This is the first wave of Digisex, Dr. Twist explains.
In the second wave, a human engages in some sort of immersive technology to enjoy or cause sexual stimulation. This involves things like VR technology and even sex with robots. Dr. Twist acknowledged that this "engagement," is not something everyone has tried, but is indeed becoming more popular. The fact that publications like The New York Times have covered digisexuality, marks its emergence into the mainstream.
Given the level of modern technology sextech companies are working with these days, Dr. Twist also acknowledges the very valid concern that people could start abandoning partnerships with other humans for the realistic, satisfying, and immersive experiences sextech offers.
As for the third wave, Dr. Twist admits there isn’t even a clear definition of what this will look like yet. As the abilities of robotics skyrocket, and we see better and brighter AI sex robots emerge, we might indeed see our mechanical partners becoming more than sexual sidekicks we switch on when we are feeling horny. They could become beings that are looking for rights and reciprocity given their advancing state of consciousness.
Brave new world or digi-dysptopia?
Reflecting on her conversation with Dr. Twist, Giese acknowledged that we all have our prejudices about digisexuality.
"I would say whether we like it or not we all have prejudice in these areas. And fears. As for me, before the show I was super nervous. I was currently in a relationship where our sex life wasn’t balanced so everything felt like a threat. Porn, robots, …. Everything. After talking to Dr. Twist I found myself asking the real questions about my fears. She was so accepting and open. I have come to realize there’s no pressure to be with a robot just like just because I support the LGBTQ community, there’s no pressure to 'become gay.' That’s silly so I felt informed and relaxed afterwards. I have been super scared of AI replacing me. I have abandonment wounds since my husband was killed overseas. Add evangelical upbringing and boo. This show is medicine to my heart now. It’s opening me up to new horizons."
She added that for her, exploring the second and third waves of digisex are a never say never situation, but for now, she's happy to wade in wave one.
"It’s not for me as of now. I am so okay with others and find it can be a good thing just like everything has a good and bad side. I’ll for now stick with my whip and my rose vibrator."
Scary? Interesting. Inevitable? Giese and Dr. Twist take on this subject in a sparking fun and informative almost hourlong discussion that should not be missed.
