Sex Stories We Love: Back to Sex Journalism Basics! The Who, What, When, Why, & How of Sexy News
Who Starts the Sexy Engines?
Do you initiate sex or do you prefer to be seduced? Some folks fall very clearly in either direction while others can play both sides of the field. In some relationships, the roles are clearly defined...and we hope that is through choice and not just some kind of default. It can be challenging, depending on your levels of communication and sexual interests to be the person who tries to engage and start sexytimes...and, ultimately, the person who is turned down when your partner isn't interested. If you're the one who always initiates, you're the one who is always turned down (even if that only happens occasionally). Again, communication is key. If you're the one who likes to be seduced, you must be clear and caring. If that dynamic works in your relationship, go for it! Remember, though, switching roles on occasion can be sexy and thrilling. Dynamics are really fun when they're played with.
What Even Is Sex
What is sex to you? What do you think sex means to you? There are so many ways we take sex as a given part of our lives. It's an expectation introduced to us in early ages that we are then supposed to participate in as both procreators and because it feels good. Is it really as simple as that? This TEDX Talk by Gurit E. Birnbaum will give you pause for thought on your associations with sex and why it is that we participate in this act. I can't say that I'm 100% behind everything she shares (no spoilers to taint your thoughts), but I greatly appreciate her interpretations.
When Did Sex Dolls Become a Thing?
Sex dolls and the potential of sexual AI remain all the rage. Will sex doll "brothels" open? When will we have a sex robot at home? Will they be able to consent? There are so many questions around these devices, some of which are hurtling toward reality. This feels like a very modern, in the here-and-now concern. Yet, in reality, humans have been trying to get busy with life-like inanimate objects for a long, long time. Throughout history, people have tried to construct sex robots, figures, and automatons that correspond to the technology they had at that time. Ancient Greeks became masters of sculpture, replicating the human form in exquisite detail. Kinda makes sense that some of them were getting really turned on by their carvings! Kinda makes sense that they were rubbing up against them, too.
Where Is Sex Appropriate?
Looking to stir up an international controversy and get yourself known as the world's most infamous photographer? If you thought, "I'll take photos of me having sex on top of the Great Pyramids!" you're going to have to think of something original because that's taken. Yup, Danish photographer Andreas Hvid, with model in tow, secretly scaled the Great Pyramid of Giza and took some rather risque photos and video. He has since clarified that the two were only simulating sex at the top of the historic monument. Doesn't mean lots of people aren't hella pissed, though. Some saw it as a desecration while others saw it as something distasteful. The incident is being investigated and Hvid figures he better stay out of Egypt. Probably a good idea.
Why Aren't We?
Much is being made about why people are having less sex and millennials are often taking the brunt of the blame. Yet, as Dr. Lori Brotto notes, there are many reasons why people are having less sexual interaction with others, but masturbation levels haven't changed at all. Many of the reasons can be linked to common societal concerns, including body issues, low self-esteem, and stress. Other personal concerns, such as genital pain, low desire, and lack of satisfaction are also factors. This has led people having an average of nine fewer sexual encounters per year. Yet, as noted, people still masturbate at the same rate (and often for pleasure, to de-stress, and to help with sleep). This is great for personal actualization, but should we be concerned that we're not having more partnered sex?
