I am finishing this new edition of Sex Stories We Love on Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women (December 6) . It marks the anniversary of the massacre at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. Fourteen women were murdered (and ten more injured) simply because they were women. You’ll read this a few days after the 25th anniversary of this grim act, but gender-based violence is an everyday occurance. It's imporant that we keep these victims in our memories while we act in the present to end gender-based violence.

Time for Anarchy in the UK?

Britain is the talk of the sex world this week after the production of numerous types of porn were banned under the often cited premise of "protecting the children." Among the acts now banned include: facesitting, watersports, female ejaculation, caning, physical and verbal abuse (even if there is consent), and many more.

To be clear, it isn’t that British folk won’t be able to view this type of content. They will still be able to watch it. Porn producers are not allowed to create this type of content in Britain. I’m not sure how far this extends into porn production. If producers zip through the Channel to France, shoot their content, and then return to merry old England and edit and distribute the work in England...is that illegal?

This fairly arbitrary new regulation is certainly going to affect many websites and producers...and for what gain? If the idea is to keep it away from children how does this ban change anything? The content will still be available for viewing. I guess kids won’t be allowed to produce certain types of porn anymore! Yes, I’m being ridiculous...because this law is ridiculous.

I’ve always been a bit wary of emojis. Sure, they’re cute and sometimes adding a smiley face, a pouty face, or that little face that has its tongue sticking out can actually punctuate a text or IM. For a quick little expression of happiness, sadness, or other straight forward emotional responses, emojis rock.

Could they be effective in flirting or sexting? A new set of very NSFW sexy "flirtmojis" was recently released. While they're very funny and kinda hot, I wonder if anyone would actually try and engage someone for sexy fun time with them. I mean, you could string together a pretty explicit fantasy with just these little images. Just imagine Norman Reedus reading it to you! Would that turn someone on or just make them laugh?

I’m into Sexblogophilia

Our sexual imaginations seem to know no bounds. If you can think it, someone is hot for it. In a world that continues to demonize many forms of consensual sex, positive expressions of passion for a specific act, fetish, or paraphilia are desperately needed. You may not be at all interested in other people’s kinks, but you have to respect those people who are out there writing and talking about the unusual things that get them off. I recently came across this great piece on a love of cuckolding and this one about formicophilia. Since neither is a common term let me give you a short definition of each. Cuckolding is pleasure derived by a man from watching or knowing his female partner is having sex with another man. Formicophilia is the sexual pleasure from the sensation of insects crawling on one’s skin. Neither are likely to get much traction as a fetish in the mainstream. They are rarely discussed. However, by not discussing these and other lesser known predilections, those who are into them can often feel uncomfortable and unsure of their sexual needs.

Remembering Bound

Everyone has a movie or two that greatly influences their lives. I’ve got several, but this isn’t about one that influenced my life. However, I remember when Bound came out. I remember the groundswell that film caused. I will also readily admit that I was young; it was sexy and my male gaze was all over it. It had a profound effect on many people in my social circle. We were in university. We were exploring and just starting to understand our sexuality. Here was, in the rarest of instances, a film featuring an authentic depiction of lesbian sexual acts. It was truly revelatory for a number of women in my group of friends. We talked about the film a lot. Reading this recollection of the famous Bound sex scenes by Jennifer Tilley, one of the stars, reveals just how understanding the Wachowskis and the performers were in the need to present this love story from an authentic voice. They were smart enough to consult Susie Bright! Why don’t other filmmakers make such an effort when portraying marginalized characters?

Parenting Done Right

As anyone out there with children will attest, we’re always wondering if we’re doing right by our progeny. We wonder if we’re raising them to be good people, if we’re providing for them, and if we’re enabling them to succeed. Some of the most difficult topics to consider discussing with our children include sex, sexuality, and gender. This story of a family running a new birth announcement for their son who came out as transgender is a phenomenal example of parenting done right. Such an act may seem symbolic to some, but can be seen as a way of accepting a child as they are. Some parents have a very difficult time accepting a child’s transition. The experience was new for Yolanda Bogert. Yet, she recognized how key it was to welcome Kai not only to the world, but to their family. This is one of the best things I’ve seen on the Internet this year.

Male Birth Control: Coming Soon

The idea of a birth control medication that does not interfere with the hormonal balance of the person taking it sounds ideal. I am sure many women out there will be greatly relieved by this prospect. Here’s something that might make you even happier: this new birth control will be for men. A potential male birth control, which is essentially a polymer filter in the vas deferens, is in trials and proving effective in animal testing. This is great news in establishing greater equality in preventing unplanned pregnancies. The female reproductive system has been regulated for so long that one has to wonder if men face the same controls. Will a Hobby Lobby-esque incident occur for men?

Men’s health is always considered paramount. Now a non-medical version of male birth control is being introduced. Women have been given the hormonal version for decades. Here’s hoping this new technology isn’t scuttled by those who hope to maintain the status quo.
