Talking About Porn
It used to be that parents had the one BIG sex talk with kids (hopefully with many others interspersed as well). Now, it is impossible to avoid the elephant on the screen: porn. As fabulous sex educator Cory Silverberg notes: kids are likely to come across porn shortly after they start accessing your computers and devices. As as this letter points out, that is a troubling situation for many parents. Silverberg reminds us that not only do parents have to address sex, but they have to have the porn talk. Maybe it's because I am literally looking at a few sex toys while I type this, but I consider them to be pretty much commonplace. They get mentioned in movies, on television, in songs, and in casual conversation. Hell, some people even use sex toys as objets d’art in their homes. So, to think that just 30 years ago then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher considered banning sex toys. Now, 30 years is a long time in the advancement of positive sex in society, but considering outlawing dildos and other toys to "protect public decency" is absurd. Sex toys have been around as long as there have been people. Banning them would be completely obscene.
