The Top 7 Bondage Sex Toys for Getting All Tied Up

Bondage can be really romantic and sexy - with the right gear.

If you haven't tried bondage, maybe you don't think of it as romantic. But, oh god, it sure can be. Bondage, done right, requires communication, respect and mutual care.

It's also, well, bonding. Tying someone up is sort of like undressing them in reverse. Instead of stripping them down, you add a few layers in the same sensual way you removed their clothes. Then it's up to you to shower them with all kinds of attention and pleasure; your partner has given you the controls and is opening themselves up to your total attention.

Before You Play: Bondage Safety 101

Now that you have the "ingredients", all you have to do is put them all together for some steamy intimate moments that make you see your partner in a new light.

Before you do that, though, you'll want to pay attention to a few quick safety tips.

Always Communicate

Especially when you're new, leave the gags out of your play; it's important to be able to talk to one another. Just like sitting at a computer desk, your limbs can "go to sleep" when left in one position for a long period of time in bondage - especially when time flies so fast when you're having fun! The ability to talk to one another will allow you both to make adjustments on the fly.

Never Leave a Bound Person Alone

Things can happen. Things you never want to think about happening just ... happen sometimes (like home fires!). A bound person should never be left alone. Even if you're role playing a scene where your partner is the "helpless, ignored, blindfolded captive," you'll want to be quietly sitting across the room where they can't see you.

Ensure You Have the Key

While none of the products on this list are lockable, if you ever start to incorporate locks into your play, make sure you have the key. You know this while reading this list, but it can be easy to forget when you're turned on and want to see your partner bound as quickly as possible. A quick fix? Always store the keys inside of their corresponding locks with the locks locked. This way, you have to unlock the lock if you want to use it, ensuring you have the key. When you're using bondage rope or tape, keep a pair of safety shears handy, just in case.

Avoid Ouch-y Areas

All of us have spots on our bodies that give us problems once in awhile. If you have a bad knee day, avoid placing any strain on the knees. This might take a bit of planning. Even if a cuff never touches the knees, a certain position on an ankle cuff might force the wearer to twist their leg (and their knee) in a way that's a bit irritating. Luckily, most of this can easily be solved by communicating with one another and readjusting positioning as needed.

Restraints Should be Snug - but Not Squeezing

Common cuff spots include the wrists and ankles. Guess where nerves run particularly close to the surface? The wrists and ankles. While it can be hard to place a Velcro-fastening cuff too tightly on the wrist, if you try other types of bindings, you'll want to be cognizant of how tightly you place the cuff on. Remember: it isn't vital for the cuff to not move; the only thing it needs to be is snug enough that the person can't wiggle their entire hand or foot out of it. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to slide 2-3 of your own fingers underneath the cuff.

Know How to Tie

Cuffs and bondage tape offer an instant, jump-into-it bondage experience. If you're choosing to use rope, though, make sure you know some basic safe ties. (We have a whole guide on the basics here!) Incorrectly tied rope can cause nerve damage - and it's honestly just not very comfortable! Whatever you do, never tie rope around the neck.

Before You Play: Some Helpful Bondage Tips

And, of course, since we're Kinkly, we have some great tips to make your first explorations as seamless and enjoyable as possible!

Pick and Choose Your Bindings

A lot of bondage kits come with a number of cuffs, but there's no law that says you have to use them all. If the four cuffs on the Sportsheets Under-the-Bed Restraint System sound hot but you're nervous about having all of your limbs restrained, just try one cuff to see how it goes. Even binding a single limb can offer all the benefits of bondage with less potential for anxiety.

Talk about Your Positions First

Most of us don't know everything about our partner on any given day. That's why talking about your plans ahead of time, with your partner, can eliminate last-minute "I'm really not OK with that" surprises. Plus, it gets you both thinking and fantasizing about your upcoming fun - and what's better than that?!

Start with Familiar Activities

Trying bondage can be a lot on its own. You don't need to go and add a bunch of other new activities at the same time! Instead, especially if you're still a bit unsure about restraint, start by adding a blindfold to a sex position you already love. If you enjoyed that, maybe you want to try wearing cuffs (but not binding them to anything!) during your second-favorite sex position. If that feels hot, you might want to try some light, restrictive bondage during mutual masturbation or oral sex. You can simply add restraint to the activities you already enjoy!

Find Something That Feels Sexy

Many cuffs look like they're designed for a BDSM dungeon. If that look isn't your thing, don't think bondage is off the table! Instead, look for soft, flowy fabrics and romantic-looking bondage like the Sportsheets Silky Sash Restraint, Coquette Cuffs, Sportsheets Amor Bondage Kit, Liberator Silky Tie-Ups, or Sportsheets Brat Cuffs. They give the hottest "romance novel main character energy".

Erotic Bondage Sex Positions

You already know that we're the best resource for sex positions, and that includes bondage sex positions too!

These bondage sex positions are particularly beginner-friendly, so they can translate to real-life just as easily as they did in your fantasies.

Spread Eagle Bondage Sex Position

Spread Eagle Bondage Position: A person lies on a bed, flat on their back, with their wrists and ankles tied to each of the bed's four corners.

A list of bondage sex positions wouldn't be complete without the Spread Eagle position. It's just so good. You get to spread out on the nice, comfortable bed in a nice, comfortable position with easy access to the majority of the body.

It's so easy to modify too! Loosen any bondage tethers to give the bound partner room to wiggle around, or tighten them to reduce their movement. Restrain all four limbs, or get an Extreme Under-the-Bed Restraint System for more bondage points to bind thigh cuffs, a collar, or a waist cuff in the mix. It's all up to you!

Bind and Bang Bondage Sex Position

Bind and Bang Sex Position. The receiving partner lays on their back with their hips propped up in the air by the Wedge. Their wrists are bound to the Wedge. The penetrating partner kneels up against the Wedge for sex.

If you like G-spot and P-spot pleasure, this sex position offers loads of that - and the opportunity for bondage! The Liberator Black Label Wedge makes it easy to line up the restrained partner and penetrating partner's hips, making it easier to hit the G-spot or P-spot.

Modifying the Bind and Bang is easy too! If bondage isn't on the menu, simply unclip the receiving partner's wrists, and you'll be bondage-free! If extra bondage is on the menu, the receiving partner's stationary position makes this a great fit for adding a blindfold, nipple clamps, or a spreader bar for the ankles (behind the kneeling partner's back!)

Private Rubdown Bondage Sex Position

Private Rubdown Sex Position: The receiving partner is laying flat on their stomach on top of a soft surface with their wrists bound above their head. The giving partner straddles them, rubbing their back and aligning the genitals for penetration.

"Oh no, I'm forced to enjoy this wonderful, relaxing massage. How terrible!"

Bet you didn't know that you could mix bondage and relaxation, but now you do! While the Private Rubdown position is shown with the Liberator Bondi, it can be done with a simple set of wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs - or any other bondage you had in mind.

As a bonus, for receiving partners who feel uncomfortable being the center of attention during a massage, your "bound" status can be the mental release you need to fully relax into the activity!

Carnal Clutch Bondage Sex Position

Carnal Clutch sex position. The receiving partner is laying flat on a surface while their ankles are in the air. The Liberator Talea's bondage cuffs are wrapped around the receiver's ankles while the penetrating partner holds the Talea up in the air. Their hips are pressed up against one another.

The Carnal Clutch sex position uses a spreader bar as a great leverage point for deep, powerful thrusts on the edge of your bed (or any other piece of furniture, you naughty explorer, you!). The lifted legs make for deeper penetration, and the penetrating partner helps support the receiver's ankles in a spreader bar to make this position go as long as you'd like.

Select your spreader bar to match your mood with the Carnal Clutch. The Liberator Talea is shown above, and it offers a soft, less dungeon-y feel to your bondage. If you like the idea of pleasure in a dangerous basement, though, the clinking, chilly metal of the Sportsheets Adjustable Spreader Bar may be a much better fit.
