How to Explore Clit Tapping

Published: FEBRUARY 22, 2022 | Updated: JULY 21, 2022
Everyone loves a good bean-flicking sesh!  The clit taping technique is a great way to get your bits tingling, and good news! There's a toy for that.

There are thousands of ways to please any body part. With the thousands of ways our bodies can move (and all of the magical sex toy tools that our human creativity has created!), there are a whole lot of ways to stimulate any given pleasure zone on the body - and that includes the clitoris.

Today, we're focusing on the clitoris - and one very specific way to pleasure it: clit tapping.

What is Clit Tapping?

I know, I know: you're going to be surprised here, but clit tapping is the act of tapping the clit. This is why I get paid the big bucks, right?

But to break it down more, clit tapping is performed through bursts of sensation (each "tap") that is quickly removed - but then quickly repeated (another tap a few milliseconds later.)

Think of it as playing "Whack a Mole" with the clitoris - but with a lot, lot, lot less power. (Please don't play "Whack a Mole" with someone's clit unless you're both into that one.)

Better yet, think about how you double-tap with your finger on a laptop's trackpad to "click" on something.

We're just taking that same movement and applying it to the clitoris in a very, very similar movement.

How is Tapping Different from Rubbing?

For as long as people have been pleasuring clits, there have been different ways to pleasure these highly-sensitive nubs. If you start talking to clit-owners, one of the most popular methods is rubbing.

Instead of a burst of sensation that quickly is removed (like tapping), rubbing generally uses a side-to-side (or up-and-down) motion. The fingers (or toy; whatever you like!) keeps in constant contact with the clitoris.

Neither sensation is "better" or "worse" than the other. They're just different!

Especially as someone is starting their journey into arousal, the constant pressure of rubbing can be too intense - and actually painful. Tapping might be their preferred method of pleasure until their body is warmed up.

For others, especially those with a sensitive clitoris, the constant sensation can feel overwhelming - tapping offers less constant stimulation while still feeling amazing. Quite a few people can ride the sensations of tapping all the way to orgasm - no rubbing required!

How to Explore Clit Tapping

Exploring the world of clit tapping is as simple as tapping the clit. Really. Honestly. That's it.

If you're just starting out, I recommend using all four of your fingers (minus the thumb) pressed together into a nice line - and tapping overtop the vulva where the clitoris is. This gives you a nice, broad surface that can diffuse the sensations. Not only does this broad surface give you a better likelihood of hitting the clit (through taking up more physical space), but it also activates the nerve endings of the surrounding vulva too. Double your fun!

As you continue to explore and figure out what you love, you can decrease the number of fingers. Experiment with one, two, or three fingers to find the "sweet spot". What provides the perfect amount of broad pressure while perfectly hitting your favorite clitoral spots?

If you find that tapping overtop of the vulva isn't providing enough stimulation, consider using your other hand to spread the labia - and tapping directly on top of the clit. Keep in mind: this can feel really, really intense for a lot of people, and it's best done when the body is already aroused and rarin' to go. If you try direct tapping too early, it can be painful - not pleasurable.

Clit tapping is as customizable as it is fun. You can easily change the intensity of your clit tapping by simply upping the frequency or the power. So, essentially, tap harder and/or tap faster. If you want to slow things down and enjoy more sensation, simply tap softer - or tap slower.

Keep in mind that clit tapping can simply be a part of a wider range of ways to pleasure your favorite clitoris (whether that's yours or someone else's!) It can be used in conjunction with rubbing - or it can be done while providing vaginal pleasure. It can be a way to give your mouth a break during oral sex for a few minutes - or it can be done with the surface of your favorite sex toy to add sensation. It's just a different way to touch a clit!

If you're a penis-owning person who has a clitoris-owning partner, don't forget about the fun of doing this with your erection! Especially if the two of you are about slide into some intercourse, clit tapping with the weight of the penis can provide a lovely sensation that keeps the anticipation running high.

Are There Toys that Do This For Me?

After you've tried clit tapping and fallen in love with it, you're going to try to do it for 20 minutes at a time - and quickly experience soreness in places you didn't know could be sore.

Luckily for us, the technology now exists to explore the world of clit tapping. It's still a relatively new sex toy technology, but a few manufacturers now offer it. Just place the toy up against the clitoris, and a small point inside of the vibrator presses itself out and back in to do all of the "tapping" work for you.

Deia Arouser clit tapping toy

To give you an idea of what it looks like, one of those types of clit tapping sex toys is the Deia Arouser. You can see the fingertip-sized center where the tapping sensations are focused. Just place the Deia Arouser over the clitoris and let it do its job! Further enhancing your experience, the Arouser is also equipped with 10 vibration settings - which allows you to explore more than just tapping with a single toy.

As most clit tapping toys use a small, fingertip-sized tip to provide the tapping sensations, most people will want to warm-up with broader sensations before moving onto a clit tapping toy. That way, the pinpoint tapping sensations from your new sex toy feel amazing!

Can I Orgasm from Clit Tapping?

Well, that's mostly something to find out for yourself! Every body is different - so what gets you off won't necessarily get someone else off.

For me, personally, clit tapping can be orgasmic in the right circumstances. It isn't as easy of an orgasm as rubbing for me, but with the right circumstances, wow, it's fantastic! I'm especially fond of clit tapping as some of the first touches to my clit. Jumping straight into rubbing can feel uncomfortable, but some light taps across the top of the vulva feel pleasurable while simultaneously feeling a bit flirty and playful.

If you want to see if clit tapping can be orgasmic for you, I recommend starting your next pleasure session with a bit of tapping - and seeing how it feels. If you tend to rub, grind, or use a toy, consider swapping it up with some clit tapping as you get closer to orgasm - and experimenting with the frequency, power, and broadness of your tapping to see what helps get you off.

It's entirely possible that clit tapping won't be your secret button to orgasm - and that's okay! Not every sensation needs to be instantly orgasmic; add clit tapping to your repertoire of options to keep sensations feeling fresh while exploring a new way to pleasure yourself (or your partner!) for future endeavors.
