Fear-based sexuality programs are sex education programs that focus on the negative aspects of sexuality and sexual intercourse. These programs instill fear and biased ideas on sexual orientation, gender, family, and sex. There is often a negative message when it comes to contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. These programs are designed to point children toward abstinence-only and abstinence-only-until-marriage sexuality.
On the other end of the sex education spectrum are the comprehensive sex education programs. These programs are science-based and age-appropriate. They discuss all aspects of sex, contraception, human sexuality, and sexually transmitted disease. While these programs seem to be ideal, in reality, sex education programs fall in between comprehensive and fear-based abstinence programs.
