Gendered

Updated: JANUARY 12, 2017

The term gendered refers to anything that displays characteristics of, or uses terminology referring to the stereotypical gender roles of male and female. This can be seen in language, products, clothing, and many social situations.

More About Gendered

Examples of gendered things are everywhere. Stores that display toys for boys and toys for girls separately, different lines of products sold as "for women," and language that assigns everyone a stereotypical gender role such as "ladies and gentlemen" are all examples of gendering. Gendering is problematic because it assumes that all people exist according to the strict male/female binary and as such display the arbitrary traits society has assigned to people of their perceived gender. This leads to the erasure of all people who do not conform to stereotypical gender roles.
