Sexual realignment surgery is another name for the process frequently referred to as sex reassignment surgery or gender confirmation surgery. During this surgical procedure the appearance and functionality of a trangender person's pre-existing physical sexual characteristics are modified to correspond to their identified sex. The process can include a hysterectomy, mastectomy, breast augmentation, and construction of a vagina or penis as necessary as well as ancillary procedures like vaginectomy or orchiectomy.
SRS is recognized as treatment for adults experiencing gender dysphoria due to their phyiscal characteristics not matching their identity and, as such, many public and private insurance plans now contain specific language defining SRS benefits.
The procedure is also performed nonconsensually on on intersex people, usually during infancy, in an attempt to "normalize" their bodies. This is a practice that was renounced by the United Nations.
